Daniel Giamario, Pioneering Astrologer, originator of the Shamanic Astrology Paradigm
Daniel Giamario is the founder of the Turning of the Ages Mystery School (TOTAMS), creator of the Shamanic Astrology Paradigm—now known as the TOTAMS Astrology Paradigm or Giamario Approach—and one of the pioneering voices in experiential, ceremonial and Earth-centered astrology.
Daniel began studying astrology in 1969. His original foundation was deeply influenced by humanistic astrologer Dane Rudhyar, whose work helped him understand astrology as a path toward meaning and life purpose rather than a deterministic system.
A transformative vision quest at Mount Shasta in 1981 changed the direction of Daniel’s life. He received a powerful inner instruction: if he was going to continue teaching astrology, people also needed to know and experience the night sky.
That experience became the seed of an astrological approach that brings together chart interpretation, archetypal psychology, planetary initiation cycles, sacred sites, ceremony and direct observation of the cosmos.
Today, Daniel continues teaching, writing and mentoring astrologers through the Turning of the Ages Mystery School, which offers online courses, certification pathways, community programs and in-person night-sky experiences.
I turn astrology into story and astrologers into humans…

This conversation begins with a simple but radical invitation: to look up.
For many of us, astrology first arrives through a birth chart on a screen: a collection of symbols, placements and interpretations that promises to explain who we are. But Daniel Giamario reminds us that astrology existed long before software, algorithms or perfectly calculated charts. It began as a relationship: between human beings and the Earth beneath them, the sky above them and the mystery moving through both.
Daniel’s story takes us back to Mount Shasta in 1981, where an experience changed the direction of his life and work. He understood that if he was going to continue teaching astrology, he could no longer teach only the chart. People also needed to encounter the planets themselves: to step outside, recognize them in the night sky and experience astrology as something living.
That message feels particularly meaningful today. We have access to more astrological information than ever before, yet information alone does not necessarily bring us closer to ourselves. We may know our placements and transits while still feeling uncertain about what our lives are asking from us.
Daniel offers another way of understanding the birth chart. In his approach, it is not a verdict, a personality label or a fixed description of the person we will always be. It is a set of instructions: an invitation into qualities and experiences that may not yet feel familiar. The Moon can reveal the lineage and capacities we already carry, while other parts of the chart point toward the consciousness we came here to develop.
This changes the central question of astrology. Instead of asking only, “Who am I?” we begin asking, “Who am I becoming, and am I willing to participate in that becoming?”
Daniel captures this beautifully when he transforms the familiar biblical phrase “Many are called, but few are chosen” into something that restores our agency: “Many are called, and only some agree.” The chart may carry a calling, but no astrologer, teacher or planetary transit can force us to answer it. We must consciously agree to live it.
The same invitation appears within our relationships. The qualities we desire, admire or reject in another person may reveal parts of ourselves that have been projected outward. Through Daniel’s exploration of Venus, Mars and the inner sacred marriage, relationship becomes more than the search for someone who will complete us. It becomes a path toward reclaiming and integrating what we have not yet learned to embody within ourselves.
His discussion of the Sacred Feminine carries an equally important message. Restoring the Feminine is not about reversing the hierarchy and rejecting the Masculine. It asks us to imagine a new relationship between these principles, within our cultures, our relationships and our own psyches. Healing does not come from replacing one form of domination with another, but from creating a more conscious inner union.
After nearly six decades of studying astrology, Daniel does not present himself as someone who possesses all the answers. His experience has led him toward greater humility. Great Mystery cannot be captured completely by a chart, a system or a prediction; it can only be approached. Astrology becomes wiser when it helps us participate in mystery without pretending to control it.
That humility may be one of this episode’s most important lessons. A meaningful teacher does not ask us to surrender our authority. A meaningful astrologer does not dictate our future. They help us recognize the compass already forming within us, and then allow us to choose.
Humanity is now facing that same choice collectively. Technology is transforming how we understand ourselves, old structures are unraveling and several possible futures appear to be emerging. Astrology may help us recognize the magnitude of the cycle, but it cannot decide which future we will create.
That decision remains profoundly human.
Perhaps this is why Shamanic Astrology matters now. It asks us to return to what cannot be automated: direct experience, conscious participation, relationship, discernment and wonder. It reminds us that we are not merely observing planetary cycles from a distance. We are living inside them.
The sky may reveal the invitation. But we are the ones who must look up, listen, and decide whether we agree.
What happens when astrology leaves the computer screen and returns to the living sky?
In this episode, Daniel Giamario takes us back to the beginning of his extraordinary journey. From discovering Dane Rudhyar’s The Astrology of Personality in college to studying meditation, archetypal psychology and global spiritual traditions, Daniel’s path was always guided by a search for meaning.
But the decisive turning point came during a vision quest at Mount Shasta in 1981. That experience convinced him that astrology could not remain only an intellectual practice: astrologers needed to know the sky directly.
Daniel began taking students into the desert near Joshua Tree, where they studied their charts beneath the stars and developed a personal relationship with planetary and constellational patterns. These experiments became the foundations of what he later named the Shamanic Astrology Paradigm.
Throughout the conversation, Daniel explains how his system views the Moon as lineage, the Ascendant as current-life intent and planetary transits as initiatory processes. He also explores the inner sacred marriage, the relationship between Venus and Mars, the limits of astrological certainty and the responsibility of astrologers to remain humble before Great Mystery.
The episode concludes with a question that reaches beyond astrology: during this profound turning point in human history, what kind of future—and what kind of humanity—are we choosing to embody?
Daniel’s approach moves astrology beyond abstract interpretation and into direct participation.
Rather than treating the birth chart as a static description of personality, the TOTAMS (Turning of the Ages Mystery School) Astrology Paradigm approaches it as a map of the soul’s journey. The Moon and South Node speak to lineage, familiar patterns and the experiences we bring into this lifetime, while much of the remaining chart points toward intention: the qualities, archetypes and possibilities we are being invited to embody.
Daniel’s work emphasizes five interconnected areas:
Daniel’s astrology is non-deterministic. The chart may reveal intention, but each person must decide whether—and how—to participate in that invitation.
While studying philosophy and East Asian studies, Daniel discovered Dane Rudhyar’s The Astrology of Personality. He also began learning astrology from a fellow student who became his first teacher.
Daniel trained and worked as a meditation teacher while continuing his astrological studies. His experiences within spiritual organizations also taught him to recognize the shadows of hierarchy and guru culture.
During a vision quest at Mount Shasta, Daniel experienced a direct transmission that astrology must be taught alongside genuine knowledge of the night sky.
Daniel began taking groups to Joshua Tree and experimenting with astrology as an embodied, Earth–sky experience. Many of the techniques and philosophical foundations of his emerging paradigm developed during this period.
Daniel began using the phrase “Turning of the Ages” in the 1980s to describe humanity’s position within a much larger precessional cycle and collective transition.
His work evolved through several schools and communities, eventually becoming the Turning of the Ages Mystery School. Today, the school integrates chart interpretation, planetary cycles, relationships, cosmology, night-sky observation and professional certification.
“Great Mystery—all you can do is approach it. You can’t own it.”
“The chart is a set of instructions. It’s not a description of how a person is.”
“The age of the guru is finished.”
“If I was going to continue teaching astrology, people also needed to know the night sky.”
I’m not claiming to be a shaman. The archetype that works best for me is wizard.”
“The Moon represents lineage—the awareness and consciousness that you already have.”
“The chart is a set of instructions. It’s not a description of how a person is.”
“Many are called, and only some agree.”
“Life purpose gives you an internal compass.”
“Humanity has a number of different timelines that it can choose.”

the miracle. Welcome back to another Backstage Astrology episode. My name is Mayra Medina and today I am honored to welcome Daniel Giamario at Backstage Astrology. Daniel is a pioneering shamanic astrologer and the global school dedicated to restoring astrologer astrology as a direct direct lived experience of the sky. Daniel, you have more than 50 years of experience. You have visited sacred sites around the world and you are known for guiding people to step outside and reconnect with the cosmos through real-time observation of eclipses, lunar
standstills and planetary cycles. Your approach moves beyond interpretation into initiation. And this is astrology not just as a knowledge but as a relationship, embodiment and remembering. So Daniel, I’m so honored to have you here. Welcome to Backstage Astrology. Please, I would love if you could introduce yourself,
Daniel, the person. Who is Daniel behind the astrologer and obviously your story? Well, thank you for inviting me. It’s a pleasure to have this conversation with you. Uh um so where would I Okay, I live in the Philippines now. Um I came from a um military family and uh my father was an officer in the United States Army and we traveled all the time you know so I’m an example of what happens to a young person who happens to be in you know a diplomatic diplomat family or military family. Uh I spent many years
in Thailand when I was young. I went to 10th and 11th grade in Thailand. Um and then I lived there again for another three or four years. Um and we lived in Germany, other places. So, you know, basically had a uh I would say good one-third of my life has been outside of the United States. Okay. Um and then so
uh I’m married. I’ve been I’ve been an expat American for about um 13 14 years. Okay. Um, before that I lived in uh I would spend about half my time in in southern Arizona and half my time in Hawaii. And so I had to go back and forth between those two places before uh I met I met my Filipino wife in Hawaii. I did not know so she was there working on an organic farm when I when I when I first met her.
She had gone there to be what is called a woofer. I don’t know if you know what that is, but it’s a it’s where uh people go to learn about organic farming and then they get a residency. Um uh they don’t get paid, but they get room in board and then they learn. So that’s how I that is through that experience that I first met her. Um but if I go back further in my story, um so I was in college from 1966 to 1970.
So, I’m one of those um Pluto in Leo baby boomers. And uh when I was in college, um I I had a double major in philosophy and East Asian studies um with a with specialties in um what was called the philosophy of of interpenetration which combines um a c the higher forms of Buddhism with German existentialism and and vanta. So it was a combination of those different things. I was not really into astrology until my senior year. Uh so it was about 1969
and there was a book that came out in paperback um by the man who turned out to be my um mentor. Um uh basically my whole original foundation was through the work of a man by the name of Dane Rudhyar and he wrote a book called uh the astrology of personality and that first oh wait a minute maybe there is something to this astrology thing and and so then it was around that time I met a woman my same year in college and she was an astrologer uh so we were um in relationship for some period of time and one of the first things I said to
her was um um you know I would love to be your apprentice. Would you teach me everything you know? And so she trained me to be an astrologer right and so but then she also was into Dane Rudhyar and so that was what um have you heard of him before? Of course. Yes.
Oh, you have? [Laughter] Yeah, he’s huge. Okay. Okay. So um there’s this thing that happened where um he this was back in the days of course where I was trained to be an astrologer doing everything by hand and and so uh once I figured out how to do that and she um shared with me certain techniques that um uh actually formed the foundation of my whole approach um which was different than the more mainstream or classical approach to astrology. And uh then I said, “Well, now that I know how to do this and now that you’ve trained me in
this, um who else should I read or where where else should I go to get more information?” And she said, “Read every one of his books first before you do anything else.” So that that’s what I did. But anyway, all during the 70s, um I did not stay in the university after I graduated. I actually had about five years where um I had dedicated myself to become a teacher of meditation. So I was a I was actually involved in the early 70s and in the transcendental meditation organization until I
by direct experience um perceived its shadow and saw what a cult it was and and so therefore um I had to get out of that. But I still was doing astrology all that time period as well as being a meditation teacher.
Uh and by the time it got to about 1980 um uh I was feeling very um dissatisfied with what I was doing. And then in the late 70s and early 80s I happened to be living in Los Angeles at that time period. And uh there was this organization that had um these um campouts that it was called the medicine wheel gatherings and it was run by a lot of different Native American teachers. But I which I learned a lot from actually um I got trained by a number of them.
But I was most gravitating toward a woman, not native, but um uh named Joan Halifax, who um who actually had been for many years married to Stan Grof, who was the um person who put together um a holotropic breath work.
Oh, okay. Right. And she had just left that marriage and she was involving herself in core shamanism. And so she was she decid she was uh uh leading a vision quest experience to Mount Shasta. And I and my friend Howard and myself while he was another disgruntled TM person and we both um decided to go on that trip and that was in the summer of 1981 at Mount Shasta and that entirely changed my life. I mean I I basically
had an experience there that um uh opened up a whole different dimension which actually is what started my journey into earth sky direct experience astrology. I had a direct transmission that said if you’re going to continue to do astrology and particularly if you’re going to teach astrology then it’s absolutely essential that you only teach it by also having people know about the night sky. So then for the next five or six years I took people to um a place called Joshua Tree outside of Los Angeles and uh experimented with I was living in LA but uh but I had this
instruction from a rock teacher there that um to go and be apprenticing to that large stone face and to be there one weekend a month for a year. And it , 1 secondwas during that time period and I did that and so u during that time period I started experimenting took people other took other people out there and put them on the ground did astrology under the sky and and many of the main techniques that went that go into the unique paradigm we use as well as the original structure of the three different schools that I’ve um founded um came from that
time period. Um so that was the birth of shamanic astrology. and and also many of the other um awarenesses that came through to only a few of us in the 80s um which had to do with where um humanity is in the greater uh processional cycle, the end and the beginning of a 26,000year cycle. And it comes from that that the current name of the school is called the turning of the ages mystery school. I was going to say although um back in the 80s I actually coined that expression turning of the ages.
Other other people were using the expression galactic alignment but I was um using turning of the ages and uh that is associated with um the greater uh cosmology and kendrics but also connected more recently since 201 12 134 the work of a man by the name of Bibu Dev Nishra Mishra which is regarding the ending of the Kali Yuga and the way of of connecting in the end of the Kali Yuga with the processional cycle. So those are some of the larger picture pieces. Um uh
so that’s uh you know there’s more to it like as far as why we have a a different um paradigm you know we use a different view of the moon and ascend it and you I think probably Narayah shared with you about some of that stuff. Yeah, actually I wanted to ask you for um the audience here at Backstage Astrology. Maybe you can explain them briefly what does shamanic astrology is because some of them might get confused with esoteric astrology or vibrational astrology. So can you just explain since you’re the pioneer of this paradigm what is shamanic astrology?
Well, it’s really interesting um because back in the 80s um literally the only other people who would use that expression um were um it would be like uh uh a version of astrology that would be based upon a connection to animals or to to to different plants or things like that. Um
uh and since that time period um there’s probably 15 or 20 other groups out there I I’ve lost count that will use the generic expression shamanic astrology.
So um what I try to do and in fact I even have a um a trade a service mark on it. It’s called the shamanic astrology paradigm to distinguish it from these other things. I’ll give you an interesting example. Um you some it used to be I would give a talk and it would be and it would something in that talk would be shamanic astrology and they say
oh uh a person would come up and say um well how do you do drum journeys with astrology right because people people were thinking of that aspect of shamanism right and then I would have young people usually young people would come up to me and say what plant medicines are you using with the astrology [Laughter] right there. But as No, no. This this is one of the reasons why um I changed the name of the school to Turning of the Ages Mystery School because I can certainly spend a lot of time explaining that shamanism
goes it’s it’s like an original way of life on this planet, you know, be before patriarchy and and before um uh the beginning of the Kali Yuga, I mean, shamanism was everywhere. Um, and and I would tell people I’m not a shaman. I’m in fact if you wanted to say if I was to say what archetype I am, I I’m not a shaman. I’m a wizard. [Laughter] But um
uh the my point being that um it’s a form of astrology that has shamanic principles and and while even there there’s different people have different views of what that would be but what I believe it to be important about it is that it it’s includes the journey of involution that meaning meaning we are here on the planet we’re part of the process of the evol evolution of the planet. We have bodies and we’re human, you know. So, there’s that that that’s there’s that part of it, but also there’s an element
of it that does have a similarity to um uh some of the other shamanic traditions. Like other shamanic traditions might say, we’ll we form a relationship with our bear nature or our eagle nature or you know different ways of connecting with um animal essences or plant essences. what we’re doing with this and it’s what I um aspire to idealistically when I train people form a relationship with the planets themselves and and if you look at that historically
I mean if you go back 3,000 years or so 2,000 3,000 years ago um the planetary essences were thought of as gods and goddesses you know so and And while I still will depending on what groups I’m in will still use th that language but in the more modern age now um then these are psychological archetypes. Uh-huh. See, the thing that was so interesting about Y about Rudhyar is that Rudhyar combined the mystery
school teachings of theosophy and things like that with Jung depth psychology. And he also combined it with um he was back in the 30s he was very into uh bahigh universal expression of um of a Christian of a tradition um these days um I honor as the philosophical foundations of the school um Rudhyar but also Jung I’ve I’ve gained a lot a lot of our psychological techniques or the anima and the animist come from Jung. Um
the archetypes from Jung and archetypal psychology. Um but also Sri Aurobindo from his philosophy of involution bringing spirit into matter as opposed trying to get out of here and then also Rudolph Steiner. So there’s a great deal of insights that come from u the from his work, you know.
So it’s it’s very yeah it’s very interesting you know coming from Mexico personally when you think of of the archetype of the shaman you would imagine you know plants and maybe some um inenso I don’t know how you call it in English and that’s why I’m asking you because people might think that shamanic astrology astrology might be related to becoming a shaman or something when it’s something completely different from what I’m getting from you. It’s more about like the relationship with the cosmos and nature from what I’m getting and how we tied in into our bodies. There is the embodiment part of it. So I wanted to ask you Daniel, what would you
consider the the three or four pillars of of um shamanic astrology? Uh I could answer that from two different directions. um uh one would be from a technique perspective which actually can be show up through our five main courses.
So one of the foundations is a way of looking at the chart which is a very specific way of looking at it as a journey of the soul. So there’s an element of it which um is where you’ve come from there. But then a good portion of it is uh looking at it from the perspective of intent. So we’re not a um a school of astrology that uh looks at it in a deterministic way. Um this came originally from uh from uh from Rudhyar because it in the 70s in the late 60s
and 70s he was very critical of classical astrology believing that the purpose of doing astrology was assist unfolding their life purpose.
uh and so rather than we’re at the effect of external forces you know so so that’s the first the second would be a way of looking at the planetary cycles as initiatory processes and and and one of the ingredients there that is really foundational is to be able to see where a person is along the timeline of their life so I mean there are certain initiatory processes that happen to everybody around the same age.
So these days, you know, very different than um 30 years ago, you you would meet someone, what’s your sign? No, no, we don’t do that. So it’s more it’s more like what I was when were you born? Because then I will know where the person is along the timeline of their life, you know. So if a person is 44 years old then I will know exactly what the main initiatory process is. If a person is 37 I’ll know that. If a person is 59 I’ll know that. And that gives at least a a better starting point in in order to be able to have a um an essential conversation. All
right. Now the third ingredient is what we call the sacred marriage material. So this this what this would mean is that by a unique way of using Venus and Mars then one can combine Jung’s idea of the projected image. You know why are women gravitating to certain types? Why are men gravitating to certain types? And then how one can learn from that and whether and particularly if a person has a difficult experience
through those that they think they’re supposed to be with then basically it gives them a set of instructions about how to gain inner wholeness. the union the the aeros the the union of male and female inside the wholeness of the soul by in integrating the external projection is to be part of your own self it’s part of your own soul. Um so and so that’s we to say it in a more simple way. Our third foundation is the unique way of looking at relationship
material in order to um uh beyond whether you get the right partner or not. How to gain inner wholeness. And then the and then the fourth part is the cosmology part. learning the night sky, understanding where we are in the greater um kundric cycles, putting your own chart on the sky. Um and it also includes one of the other features of our school which is the unification of the constellational patterns and the stars with the tropical zodiac because
they they they operate together. They’re different but one is in one is connected to the other in ways that change over time and that is associated with the um turning of the ages idea. Okay. Now then
so that’s a whole night sky training we do and then the fifth part takes that a step further which is a even greater indepth view understanding of how Venus Mars and Mercury and moon cycles operate.
So, so for so for example, if I know if I meet a woman and I know that she’s um uh 32, 40, 48, six, uh 56, 64, uh multiples of 8, I will know that she’s in a Venus return, which means that the leading edge of her life at that point is how to more powerfully become the version of the sacred feminine she came into the life to become.
Oh wow. Very interesting and different from other um astrology branches let’s say. But also I wanted to ask you in order to get there in order to actually let’s say integrate those pillars what it’s necessary because I’ve heard I mean these are like what we hear in the internet about shamanic astrology is that it it’s there is an aspect that is ceremonial there is maybe some dancing some embodiment kind of practices. Can you tell us more about you know what it’s required in order to practice shamanic astrology?
Well, we have at this stage of the game we have two different tracks the level one level two. Um uh if we go back say before 2020 um I would do our school would do um five, six, seven in-person events every year.
Uh and though that would include not so much dancing but it would include things called astrodrama which is where you would do the embodiment of the different complexes on the chart. You know you you you let’s say you had a um Venus square Saturn.
Well, you would pick someone in the group that was Saturn and someone who’s Venus and then they would they would then play it out in front of you. you know, you can see you can learn a lot from that. Um, [Laughter] we we we also would do things like create vision boards. Um, um, we would actually, um, go outside and and we we still do that today. Um, because um, in New Mexico back in about 19 when was it around 19 the late 1990s? Mhm.
Um, I became friends with the owner of the Hot Springs in New Mexico and I had the opportunity to design and have built a large stone circle. So, every year now we do groups there. And so PE and so it’s a stone circle that’s about the same um diameter as the inner circle of Stonehenge. And so then we have 12 stones on the outside and one in the middle. Um and and so we’ll do the night sky teachings there, but also would be the um way a person would um move in harmony with the with the movements of the sun and the moon.
Right? So those those are things we would do there. But I used to do that five or six times a year. But now um it’s much harder to travel um and and uh it’s it’s so so therefore we we we were smart enough before 2020 to put most of our courses online. So we have people doing stuff online. But anyway, back to your point. Um we have two levels. The first level is learning how with these techniques that I that I gave you some little background on how to read a chart, you know. So I mean pe just by knowing how
the moon works with Venus and Mars and the ascendant then even taking the first course people are able to really make an impact on people to really be of help to another person. Um but level two is the one that requires um in-person um under the sky cosmology training. Right? So we used to that used to be a requirement for every level but it’s just really hard to do that um uh now if you understand what I mean. Yeah. and and then so so those are some of the practices. Uh when a person is going for their certification for level two then
there’s some other things um uh they have to have a project like um either building a small um stone circle or or if they if they’re not in a place where they can do that there might be some sacred site close to where they live. And the and then the the requirement is that they would go there at least once a month for a year just so they can have the experience of the night sky over a period of time. And so that’s like part of um part of their learning. But then also we have a ceremonial um at the end where a person stays out under the sky an entire night, stays awake and just is
there in the wilderness. you know, we we pick places that there’s no light pollution and then the person is watching every few hours different, you know, star groups rising, different star group setting um um and then also frequently there will be some connection you know uh like like for example right now in the um in the evening sky uh Jupiter is quite bright. So for example, a person might have Jupiter in Cancer. They might be in their Jupiter return.
So if they went out under the night sky for that ceremony, well then they would get the instructions to tune in there, you know, so they would know how their chart fits onto the night sky. Um, and then that includes down to being able to um see what a per a person’s personal star is. Like for example, I’m um I’m a Libra rising, but at this time period in um in processional cycle, what was coming up for me when I was born was the star Spica, which is right smack in the middle of the priestess constellation, you know.
So any time the moon is with Spica that’s a very important uh time for me right and so to get to know your personal stars is also part of what we do right that’s amazing yeah that is that was that what you’re looking for yeah yeah a little bit more how how does it work if we actually want to take this path of like shamanic astrology and obviously to how do you say this to demitify shamanic astrology today because the new generation s, you know, with Tik Tok and all these new social media. I heard things about shamanic astrology. And I’m like, I don’t think that is shamanic astrology. Let’s just
let’s ask the source. And that’s why I thought could be interesting to, you know, to bring you and explain us what what that is. But Daniel, you also have a mystery school. It’s called Turning of the Ages Mystery School. Could you explain us what is a mystery school? maybe we can also do some you know demitification.
Um so previously if you go further back in history uh usually the connotation of a mystery school is secret knowledge.
Uh that’s not how we’re looking at it at all. We’re in a different time period right now. So um what what I mean by calling it a mystery school is that great mystery all you can do is approach it. You you can’t own it you know. So so basically a mystery school is honestly approaching what is great mystery. And the second thing which was always part of ancient mystery schools
um if you take away that whole thing that it’s secret knowledge forget that part we don’t use that at all. Um is that it did require commitment and initiatory processes a willingness to be committed to the process and to take initiation. Right?
So those are all part of what uh go into why we call it a mystery school. So it’s not another way I could put it um uh is that it’s not secular knowledge, you know, uh um an approach to great mystery. um not some sort of spooky essent occult kind of you know secret knowledge only , 1 secondheld by the elite you know nothing that right yeah because I think that I don’t know the new generations is the way they approach it you know oh mystery school studies um conspiracies and you know it
can just like get to to those places and and it is not from what I heard from you it’s at least not the turning of the mystery school. So, thanks for that. And also, Daniel, can you also tell us why, from what I’ve heard, why shamanic astrology has an emphasis on the feminine?
Well, uh, let me let me take you back for a moment to 1970. All right. [Clears throat] Um, and so this was part of the astrological renaissance that was happening at that time period. Okay?
Okay. And so one of the ingredients of it, I already mentioned one of them earlier in our conversation which was uh to be very critical of astrology that it’s only about oh we’re at the effect of external forces and it’s all deterministic and you know that too bad for me you know things like that you know like born under a bad sign you know but the other thing is was the recognition that the greatest majority of classical or traditional astrology was patriarchal.
Um, and so it was around that time period that there was a revisioning of all of that. In fact, we take it so far in our own school that we see, for example, the moon is not feminine. If you go further back in history, the moon has gods and goddesses in it. In fact, the word moon comes from the original Mona which which is a god and then the word sun comes from the word suna which is a goddess.
Now, I’m not trying to say that it should be the reverse rather that and and particularly with the moon position here as a classical or regular astrology. Oh, that’s your, you know, it’s your mother or your feminine side or something. No, it’s your lineage, you know. So, whatever your moon position is, that’s where you’ve come from. Now, some of them are quote more archetypally masculine and some of them are more archetypally feminine. Where’s your moon sign? Virgo. My favorite.
Oh, really? [Laughter] Why? I have Venus and Virgo. And uh I’m I’m glad I asked you that. In fact, um there are people that have come into the school and become very serious about the school because of what they read in my first book about Virgo, which was to which was to um absolutely well to be completely critical of what the mainstream was saying about Virgo. You’re not alone. A lot of times when I ask you know you you you kind of like didn’t want to say moon and Virgo.
[Laughter] Um so actually that this is part of a violation of the understanding of Virgo. Oh um now so I’m I’m bringing that up because in this system we would say you used to be a Virgo or you previously graduated from the University of Virgo or you come from the Virgo tribe and what Virgo lineage is is the is the lineage of a priestess. It’s essentially the version of the sacred feminine that was completely committed in service to
spirit to the sacred feminine. It was actually Gaia herself is Virgo. Wow. I didn’t know. So, uh and and in my own case, you know, because because oh, I’ll just give you this interesting example. Um in our school, just like most astrology schools, um the majority of women who come to our school are women. All right. So now I wish it was different. I recently did an apprenticehip group at one of the sacred sites that I take people to and there were three men in the group.
Every one of them including me had Venus and Virgo. Now, that is a particular, if you’re awake enough to it, it’s a particular vibration where for men who have Venus in Virgo, they recognize at a certain point that their lover is her, meaning Gaia herself. It’s a one time I was teaching in Zimbabwe in Africa and and there was a a ma a male shaman who was working with us and every time he would do a ceremony or prayer he would always
start with the expression and we give thanks to that one woman. A so but it’s a it’s not it’s not mother nurturer it’s earth mother herself you see now unfortunately this has been um violated into something critical picky analytical um almost inhuman you know boring [Laughter]
well I never personally found it boring but [Gasps] So now now that we um we’re talking about this, what would you say? I didn’t I didn’t fully answer your question. Oh, okay. Please go on. Yeah.
So we try to we’re looking at balancing masculine and feminine. So for example, I I mentioned the fifth pillar was working directly with Venus, Mars, and Mercury cycles. Um, I actually was the person who wrote some articles in 1997 that were the first mythic looking at actual Venus Mars cycles.
Right now, I wrote those articles in the mountain astrologer in 1997. Since that time period, oh my gosh, there’s been a a proliferation of women’s circles that use that same Venus material, but they left out Mars. So in our in our um school we try to make sure that it’s working with both Venus and Mars not just something that is uh because you know like we honor as a principle if you looked on our website you know one of the eighth principles is the the fact that we know who we’re in service to
which is um which is uh our earth mother you know the sacred feminine however that can be taken too are as if to leave out the sacred masculine. Yeah. Right.
So, how do you like um what would you say to those people that are only taking the feminine side and forgetting about the masculine? How do you make peace with that? I don’t know. I can’t say I’ve made peace with it.
That’s why we’ve um developed our own way of doing courses that include both. uh whenever I have the opportunity to talk to someone who is just only working with Venus often I don’t want to be you know critical of of others it’s just a lot of times they don’t know you know they just think oh Venus the working with Venus is just about the sacred feminine but but actually that’s not in true that’s not true at all because um men have a Venus position and for and uh I’ll give you a very simple example um uh I recently um was given the opportunity to be and they they actually
called me this the wizard in residence at a yoga retreat center in Thailand. All right. And so I was there for about two and a half months and I had a chance to to maybe work with 50 60 people when I was there. The great majority of them had no previous experience with astrology. And so I was trying to figure out ways that I can in a non-technical way explain the usefulness of this material.
Right? So I I would say um to the women, it was mainly women. All right? I say okay sometimes I do workshops just for men which is true whenever I can. And so one of the questions that will always finally emerge is what do we need to know about women?
What do you need to know about your wife? What do you need to know about your girlfriend? What do you need to know about that woman you just met? Right? And the answer to that is they’re not all the same. It’s really important to know the Venus position of the the woman that you’re interested in or who’s your partner or your wife or you know so on. So um for example, if you know a woman’s Venus position, then you know you will know a secret about how she would desire to be valued.
So for example, there could be a man who wants as a woman wants the woman in his life to be like his mother. But if he happens to be with a woman with Venus in Aquarius or Venus in Gemini or Venus in Sagittarius or any or Venus in Taurus, that would absolutely be ridiculous. It’s like you you’re you’re not even seeing who she is, you know? So, so you need to value her for the version of the what particular goddess she actually came in to be. Wow.
And what can you tell us about about Mars? Now that we’re talking about this, I got curious. Um, for women Yeah. So, okay. I’m doing a workshop for women. What do you need to know about men? Well, all right. You need to know the guy you’re with Mars position because that’s how it is that he would he would desire to be valued. Um, and and and frequently that’s something new. I mean, I I didn’t really make ma ma make this point probably enough before. One of the things that makes the shamanic astrology paradigm different than a lot of other types of
astrology, with the exception of your lineage, with the exception of the moon position and the south node of the moon, everything else on the chart is a statement of intent. So, it’s a set of instructions. It’s it’s not a description of how a person is. It’s and and uh I was thinking about this uh some months ago and in the Christian Bible there’s a statement many are called and few are chosen. I rewrote that for the purpose of our work. Many are called and only some agree.
[Laughter] Meaning meaning that you can choose to be who you’re intended to be or not. You know, that’s where the free will comes in. Oh, wow. Beautiful. Wow. I never thought about this. What would you tell a person now that know we’re talking about shamanic astrology, masculine, feminine, someone who has Venus and Mars together conjunct? Um, well, I mean, it depends on the archetype. I mean, actually, if they’re both the same, um, then they can’t there’s no ambiguity. I mean, that’s
that’s the one they need to integrate internally. Um uh but whether that’s easy or hard is going to be dependent upon how different that is from their moon position. Oh, okay. Interesting. That’s um So, you said you had a Virgo moon. Are we speaking of yourself there? Yes. [Laughter]
Uh what what is your uh what sign is Venus and are Venus and Mars in? So in in Aries and it’s like a thing conjunct or something in Aries. Yeah. So so the combination of Aries and Virgo. See the old self is Virgo. Now I’ll tell you something interesting about the Virgo moon. All right. So we look at this historically you know going back um several hundred thousand years. The Virgo moon is in a category of what is called what used to be called a renunciate.
They would be individuals that would not marry, not have kids. They’re they they were the priestesses. They were the ones that um were um keeping the fires burning, you know, like right um and so therefore their emphasis was not on personal relationship. They they were more like a hermit uh recluse who and different things. I mean they could be um the ones in little forest cottage growing magical herbs or or or or they could be um in the in
their temple space or they could be doing healing work. Often it has to do with women’s mysteries, you know, like the the women who would be the um uh the custod the the ones that would run and understand uh the women’s moon lodges. They would they would know the most about um about the cycles and seasons of particularly women. All right. Um now if you have Venus and Mars and Aries now this is this is this is completely different energy when there’s a
so-called quincunx they uh how can I best say this um certain signs are contrary to each other. Excuse me for a moment because I have this Italian arm swing. So, I knocked the camera a little bit. So, um let me just uh don’t worry.
Okay, there we go. Um so, um what am I saying here? Uh [Clears throat] that inconjunct, quincunx, sorry. They’re they’re neither they’re not oppo they’re not like antagonistic and they’re not in harmony. They’re so different that it requires a kind of alchemy to create a space that’s that includes the the the the reality set of each of of both together. So, so like Virgo, I mean this is very general way to put
it. It’s more of the hermit while Aries is totally aggressive, out there, spontaneous, fiery, you know. Now, uh, full disclosure. All right. Not only do I have Venus and Virgo, but I also have Aries on the descendant. , 1 secondSo in the sacred marriage understanding in our school, the two most important symbols to know the archetypes to integrate for the sacred marriage are what’s on the descendant and what your Mars position is for woman
or for me the Venus and ar Venus in Virgo and Aries on the descendant. So for me my whole journey of inquiry into the sacred feminine has been what do you do when you’re with someone with those two you know where sometime they’re a just wild aggressive strong powerful vital uh filled with Amazonian strength. All right and and then you never know when it’s going to happen. they just need to
take their space and it seems like what happened you know and so it [Laughter] , 1 secondnow for a long time you know it’s like how do we how do you deal with that until I finally realized it this could be very difficult for men to understand if you’re with a woman with that combination but I realized it’s hard for that woman too [Laughter] like how to how to integrate those two and to value both of them, you know. So there is the mission and purpose commitment Aries side, but then
there’s that hermit sacred work priestess side and and those would be both for you. Yes. Um wow, so accurate. And and also um well I don’t know if I’m going to put this on the video but I have Pluto conjuna.
So when you talk about the kind of like custodian energy I didn’t want to get married. I don’t have kids like you know and yeah anyway I don’t want to make this out of myself. I want to keep telling people about the amazing work you do. But a guy well I I’m a Libra rising. I’m sorry. I can’t help myself. Particularly if I’m talking to someone who has Venus and I’m sorry, moon and Virgo, right? So pardon me for that. Right. No, it’s okay. It’s great that that you exemplify also so people can see how you work with the charts. I mean how you teach us to work with our our own chart.
And just by this five minute conversation about our Venus and moon position, I already learned new things. So imagine what it is to study in the mystery school. Anyway, Daniel, I wanted to to tell us um what is the spiritual side of shamanic astrology? Um well maybe the way to again it’s like something I said before about um why are we a mystery school? Because it’s an approach to great mystery. But one of the things that I’ve given talks about is that astrology is the highest of the lower mysteries. Uhhuh. Explain.
Now, now I’m going to All right. [Laughter] Highest the lower mysteries. Now, if you go back further in time, astrology as was the highest of the quote sciences. It included everything, you know, included astronomy and physics and psychology and everything was in there, right? Um uh it it was a master science that incorporated everything. That was back when astronomy, you know, was a subset of astrology, you know. They they developed astronomy so they could do better calculations, you know.
So, but anyway, what are the higher mysteries? You know the higher mysteries would be things like for example grace. , 1 secondYou you don’t earn it. It’s bestowed.
Uh other higher mysteries are like how does the sacred marriage actually really happen? You can get clues but at a certain point there’s a magic that happens that either does or it doesn’t. Also the mysteries associated with selflove. Um and then of course be beyond all of that would be um how does one actually attain or experience self-realization and what does that mean anyway? You know so what astrology can do is suggest pathways.
However, there’s nothing in astrology per se that is those higher mysteries that that the higher mysteries are beyond um any even the best astrologers on the planet. I could even say this in a slightly different way. Um are you familiar with the Enneagram? Yes.
Yeah. So um well uh I for about eight years I was a student in the diamond artwork and and and wrote probably the the most spiritually oriented Enneagram book and he uses the nine points and we could I I could use the n the 12 mystery schools of life in the same way that these are facets of the diamond. Almost no one ever It’s enlightened in all nine facets, you
know. So, we’re we’re in a certain place that is our emphasis, you know. So, so basically what the insight here would be one of the places it’s like the um uh the place on the wheel, the the Enneagram which is called the seven. If you know the seven, it’s called the holy plan. the fact that the universe is unfolding with a set of um principles, you know, like laws and so on. Many astrologers are sevens because wow, they’re really going to be interested in how this whole thing is unfolding.
However, the astrologer is part of the unfolding. There’s no way for any astrologer to stand outside of it and see it, you know. So, so therefore there’s always going to be something unknowable, but the astrologer or you know other divination systems, you can get close and that is exciting,
right? But but there’s also an element of any astrologer who thinks that they could possibly know the actual intention of great mystery or the actual intention of a chart. they can get close but they cannot really know the whole story you know so my own my own ability to be relatively good at what I do quite frankly is because I’ve researched it and also because I’ve had 57 years now of practice you know so so I can say that 95% of the time beings with a Virgo moon and uh or
Capricorn I’m a Capricorn moon, you know, Capricorn moons um are uh have a particular place on the wheel, you know, and I can I can see where um uh the challenges there are, the breakthrough points are there and and also the experience of knowing what happens to large numbers of people when they’re 45 or when they’re 59 or when they’re 51 to 52, you know, and things like that. It just comes from um um I won’t say just the experience, you know, but then also knowing that that’s still not absolute. Uh every time I do a session for someone, I learn something new.
Makes it better for the next person. Wow. Daniel, 57 years. If I can ask you, you know, looking back, what has astrology asked you, asked of you as a human being, what would you say?
That’s similar to what I just said that to be in a sense of wonder and awe at the mystery and and with a sense of gratitude that I have a way of um helping other people. I mean, I’ve been asked um before I’ve been in different groups before where where you try to um uh define your life purpose. And in fact, we don’t I want to make sure we don’t run out of time here, but um the um
, 1 secondbottom line on our school really is to help people find their life purpose. That’s that is really the primary intention of our school to help people do that because you know if you know your life purpose if you know what you’re born to be and to do it doesn’t really matter what happens out there because you are here doing what you were born to do. Um, so for me when I’ve been asked that question before, it’s that the thing that that makes me the happiest where I feel like I’m doing my my uh dharma is
if I can assist another person and unfolding to their life purpose. Now I also know enough as a Capricorn moon to not to try to tell a person what they should be doing. You know, because any any good astrologer or any good spiritual teacher is just there to verify, you know, maybe maybe that’s it or maybe that’s not it, you know, because maybe we’ve been a little bit further down the road than the other person, you know, but not to do the work for them, you know, not to the the age of the guru is finished.
Daniel, how are we doing with time? I think you might need to go very soon. Um so I’m just gonna ask the final questions to close the the the interview and one of the of the questions is um from your perspective as a shamanic astrologer what are we collectively moving through at this time we know we’re living in such a turning of the ages time but more accelerated. So what would you say we’re moving through like into So that is so that is your last question. Huh? [Laughter] Or I can ask you something more basic like you know what are you no I just
it’s hard to put that in just one sentence. Let let me let me try. M um from 1962 to 2034 in my own understanding of the greater cosmology and the way we teach it in our school is the end and the beginning of a 26,000year cycle. March of 2025 was the very end of the Kali Yuga. We’re now seven or eight more years to go.
Um, in this great turning, we call it the great turning. One thing I can tell you for sure is that it’s not ever going back to how it was before 2020. It’s just not all
right. And what I share in our school is that with each succeeding powerful aspect, four planets going into new signs last year, Uranus now going into Gemini, um not to be American centric here, but the United States third Uranus return. Um the fourth turning, so many different factors. Um there are timeline splits happening and it’s it’s extremely important uh in our
school that we let people know that we’re at a very important choice point. What timeline are you choosing? Are you going to choose a timeline that’s about being a pure authentic organic human being with heart, soul, spirit and a con connection to divinity or are you going to surrender to the Borg to the AI universe? We are a non AI school you know. So basically in fact I have a whole presentation which is how AI is
the greatest danger to authentic astrology that exists. Really? You do? Where can we find that presentation? You can find it on our YouTube channel. Oh okay. Okay great. Um because because basically our emphasis in our school is person-to-person, soul-to-soul connection not by not surrendering to some algorithm. Human beings are not algorithms you know. So we’re looking for um human beings that are willing to we call them seed people. the the ones what regardless of what happens, you know, whether it’s the complete
composting of everything materialistic into some completely new world, but still people will have a choice to do that or to go with the um you know with the uh what the digital digital control grid uh the similar in digital of the entire earth, you know. You may or may not know about what I’m talking about, but you probably do. But um anyway, we are we are we are committed to maintaining the um the humanness of astrology.
Daniel, thank you so much. I know you have to go, but I will also guys explain you a little bit. Daniel has the turning of the ages mystery school. Below the video, you will find a link with all the information about Daniel, about what he’s doing, about what he’s going to do this summer with the school. And we will also have in the future Naraya, who is also part of Daniel’s school. She will be explaining us more about the logistics and technicalities of the mystery school as well as her own story.
So, hang in there. But for now, visit the link below if you want to know more about Daniel’s amazing contribution to astrology. Daniel, thank you very much for making room for us and get to know you a little bit more and I don’t know if you want to say or say goodbye with a with a final inspiring message for for all the people out there.
Well, thank you for inviting me. It’s been a pleasure having this conversation um with you and I think you gave me the space to uh say what I needed to say, you know. So, um clearly people should go to our website and and see all our offerings. There’s a huge amount of free material out there and uh and also subscribe to our newsletter.
Yeah. Do and also I just found out while you know researching that you mentor some brilliant astrologers out there. So um that we that have been here in the podcast before and will be in the podcast. So I just want I was just surprised to see oh you mentored this this person that person. So thank you for all you’ve done. Send me an email about that. I’d be curious to to see what you found out. I’ll see I’ll I’ll I’ll let you know who Well, actually, I’ll just tell you tomorrow I’m interviewing Gemini Brett. Indeed. Yeah.
Yeah. [Laughter] Anyway, Daniel, thank you so much and thank you guys for staying till the end. Sure, Daniel. Thank you. I’ll be in touch with Naraya about what comes next and I’ll let you go for now. But thank you very much.
Before you say goodbye to me, what’s your birthday? February 6, uh, 1985. That’s my birthday. And you are Libra. You No, Libra rising. You didn’t say your son. I don’t know. October 10th, 1948. Ah, October 10th. Okay. October 10th. What is your rising sign? 48. Taurus rising. Taurus rising. Say Taurus. Yes. Aquar blah blah blah.
Daniel, I hope to have you back some other time, but for now, thank you. I don’t want to steal more of your time, even though great talking to you. [Laughter] Bye, Daniel. Thank you.
