Episode Summary

This episode with Alex Trenoweth opens as both an invitation and a reflection. We begin with the spirit of Shifts Happen, the London event hosted by Steve Judd with Alex, Penny Thornton, Nick Campion, Amanda Ellis and a special appearance by Rick Levine.

Alex shares what made the original experience meaningful for her: not only the lectures, but the closeness, the accessibility, and the sense of genuine community between speakers and attendees.

From there, the conversation moves into Alex’s upcoming talk at MiNi Shifts Happen (Nov. 10th, 2025, London) where she will present Mary Shelley, Uranus, Frankenstein, mortality, modern medicine, and ethics. Her work is not just about symbols. It is about asking difficult human questions: Where do we cross the line? What is sacred? What happens when knowledge outruns wisdom?

We also talk about her distinct contribution to astrology through education and child development, the launch of her recent book, her growing public recognition, and the new direction of her courses for astrologers working with children and families. The result is an episode that feels both grounded and expansive: personal, thoughtful, funny, and quietly powerful.

Who This Episode Is For

This episode is for:

– People curious about astrology and education.

– Parents and astrologers interested in children, boundaries, and family dynamics.

– Astrology students who love storytelling, cultural astrology, and film.

– Listeners drawn to ethical practice in astrology.

– Anyone considering attending MiNi Shifts Happen or the larger Shifts Happen Too event in St Albans, United Kingdom with Steve Judd, Rick Levine, Penny Thornton, Darby Costello and Alex.

Astrological Approach

Alex’s approach is deeply educational, story-based, psychologically aware, and ethically grounded. In this conversation, what stands out is that she does not treat astrology as abstract symbolism detached from life. She uses it to illuminate how people learn, how families function, how children need structure and safety, and how cinema and cultural narratives reveal archetypal truth.

She also brings a rare combination of teacher energy and theatrical intelligence: she wants people to stay awake, laugh, think, and leave with something memorable. That comes through clearly in the way she talks about lectures, public audiences, and her desire to make astrology meaningful for people who are just discovering that it goes far beyond sun signs.

Fun Fact

Alex says one of the things she loves most about events like *Shifts Happen* is not just teaching astrology, but actually meeting the public face-to-face — especially people who are realizing for the first time that astrology is far bigger than newspaper sun signs. A very Backstage detail: she once wore big jangly earrings during a lecture and they interfered with the audio on the livestream. So now you know, don’t wear jangly earings!

Journey as an Astrologer

  • Alex describes Shifts Happen as a turning point. She says that through working alongside Steve Judd and Rick Levine, she felt she had ā€œleveled upā€ as an astrologer. More than visibility, it gave her a deeper sense of belonging. She moved from feeling slightly outside the room to feeling fully in her place within it.
  • That emotional shift matters. This episode is not just about an event appearance or a book mention. It is about what happens when years of serious work, teaching, and research finally begin to meet the right audience at the right time.
  • Her journey also reflects a larger pattern: astrology becoming more public, more interdisciplinary, and more responsible. Alex’s path through books, teaching, research, public talks, and courses shows what it looks like when an astrologer grows into her authority without losing warmth or humanity.

Key Themes & Topics

Listener Takeaways

What stayed with me after this conversation was how real Alex is.

She has authority, experience, books, research, and years in the classroom — but what moved me most was hearing her talk about nerves, belonging, visibility, and that feeling of finally growing into your place. I think many astrologers will recognize that moment: when your work has been serious for a long time, but something inside you is still catching up to what others can already see.

I also loved being reminded that astrology can do so much more than predict events or describe personality. In Alex’s hands, it becomes a language for teaching, protecting, guiding, and understanding. It becomes something that can support children, reassure parents, and open deeper ethical questions about life itself.

And maybe that is part of the real backstage story here:
that stepping into power does not always look loud.
Sometimes it looks like teaching well.
Telling a story well.
Holding a room well.
And finally trusting that you belong there.

0:04It looks like a makeup brush.

0:06Yeah, of course I wouldn’t know what a makeup brush was.

0:09So, what’s the purpose of organizing this amazingly creative?

0:14Uh to have fun

0:17and to learn and to participate in community because that’s more important than anything is hanging out with people who are like-minded.

0:29We’re all here to kind of be nudged, you know, a little bit beyond our our limits or what we think is what we know and kind of pushing that edge leading into it is really what it’s all about.

0:43What would you tell the people that couldn’t make it?

0:49Two words, you lose.

0:53Well, no. The advantage of course is that even people who aren’t here physically still can join us online and, you know, those links will be available right up through the conference. So even if they’re not here, they can still be here. But there’s a lot of opportunity to learn and grow and just because someone isn’t here doesn’t mean that they lose. It doesn’t mean that they’ve lost out. There’s so many opportunities these days.

1:20Oh, Sagittarius. How to wind up a Sagittarius. This is fun. Firstly, wear longer, baggier sweaters than they do, right?

1:31Travel more than they do.

1:33I’ve just been to Jordan. Oh, have you? I’ve just been on Antarctica.

1:39I’ve just come back from Venus.

1:43Well, classic example. If you want to upset a Virgo, you just smell bad.

1:50They all dislike body odor. Um, you know, just standing next to them on a London tube train at 5:00 on a Friday afternoon in a hot summer stage.

2:04This is dangerous. That’s going to…

2:08Saturn is on the midheaven. Often Saturn on the midheaven is a time of culmination. You get what you deserve. Whether it’s a Nobel Prize, or whether in Richard Nixon’s case, he resigned from the presidency. He resigned from the presidency of the United States because 14 years earlier when Saturn was at the bottom of the chart, he and friends of his fixed an election. Boom. You get what you deserve with Saturn at the top. But that Saturn at the top is not just the culmination. It’s also the beginning of a fall.

2:42So now let’s take a break from these concepts and just say okay so what is reality we know that reality is basically a spectrum of vibrations and what we see in the three-dimensional world everything we see is this little tiny narrow slit in this entire spectrum that we cannot perceive with our five senses

3:07Just to show you, you know, an understanding of Jupiter and Saturn. So, this is Leonardo. Hopefully, you recognize him from before. So he has Jupiter in Pisces. What was his most famous film?

3:19Titanic.

3:20Thank you. He also has Saturn in Cancer and Julie except that she has Jupiter in Aries.

3:29So, I like to put Jupiter in Aries learners sitting next to Jupiter in Pisces learners because the Jupiter in Aries learners will keep the Jupiter in Pisces learners awake.

3:41And the Jupiter in Pisces learners will bring to the Jupiter in Aries learning, slow down, enjoy, use your imagination, put the book under your pillow and let it osmosis do its magic.

3:55So, what if I do have a serious problem? So, Drew Barrymore, one of my case studies, she started smoking at 9, drinking alcohol at 11, smoking marijuana at 12, snorting coke at 13, and all before her first set of opposition at around the age of 15. Angelina suddenly dropped acting classes. Both her parents are famous actors and she wants to become a funeral director. She also starts self-harming and Leo had no known problems during this time. He went on to start Titanic just in time for a second Jupiter return. So, let’s focus on these girls.

5:02Mayra Medina:Ā Hi everyone. I’m here with astrologer and teacher Alex Chernow. And I wanted to ask her because I met her at shifts happen the conference organized by Steve J. And now they’re gathering again on November 10. They’re gathering with Rick Lavine. Alex is going to be there with Steve with some amazing topics that Alex will share with us. But Alex, first of all, how are you today and what brings you back to Shoots Happen again?

5:28Alex Trenoweth:Ā Well, I’m very well, very busy. I am so excited to be working with Steve and, you know, as you probably know, he’s a very old friend of mine and we got in contact after I’d done some interviews and he said, ā€œI heard all about your work and why don’t you have lunch with me and let’s have a little chat.ā€ And so that’s what we did. This is, I think, just after lockdown ended and I really didn’t think, you know, too much about it. I didn’t know that what would happen would be this enormous event that was Shifts Happen and so I was very excited that Steve invited me, a little bit intimidated because, you know, being between Steve Judd and Rick Levine was a little bit much. And I was worried. There’s a lot of things I was worried about. I had also done a tour through London the day before it started which was a lot of work to put together and I was concerned that, you know, maybe I’d taken on too much and just being in front of such a large audience, you know, was very nerve-wracking. And I made the mistake in my first lecture, which was about astrology and cinema, of wearing really big clanky earrings and every time I moved, because I don’t sit down when I lecture, I like to stand up, and every time I took a step they jangled apparently and interfered with all the audio.

7:02Mayra Medina:Ā Oh yeah, the livestream, the people watching. Oh wow.

7:06Alex Trenoweth:Ā What is that? No, I think of course my big jangly earrings. And then the second one was about Algol and King Charles. And of course we just had this really big incident with Prince Andrew, sorry, Mr. Mountbatten, and his moon is opposite to Algol and Mars was on his moon when he was stripped of his titles. So, you know, Algol has been very active. And then my third one was about, you know, my passion: astrology and education. And I was so wound up for it, I got very emotional towards the end of it. But it was just, you know, really such a great event. What I really enjoyed most of all was being with people. And this is what I like about MiNi Shifts Happen, is that yeah, we give our lectures, but we get to be with people. People might not know too much about astrology. Whereas you go to some conferences and it’s all about the astrologers hanging out together with their little clique, and this is about meeting people from the public who might not know too much about astrology. It’s their first time knowing that astrology is something beyond sun signs. They’re being entertained. In our case, it’s going to be three hours of lectures and then, you know, chatting in the bar area, in the lobby area, talking about our books, having really good questions and people taking a genuine interest in astrology. And that’s why I love it so much. And it’s in a beautiful venue. It’s in an old-time cinema.

8:42It’s, I’m just trying to think, somebody was arrested. Was it Paul McCartney was arrested, so you get to see his little cell that he was in. But it’s right next, it’s right in central London anyway. As I said, the best part for me is meeting the public.

9:01Mayra Medina:Ā So Alex tell us what you will be presenting. Can you give us a small bite of, you know, what you will be presenting soon?

9:10Alex Trenoweth:Ā Well, as it’s that time of year, I thought I’d look at Herschel, Uranus, and Mary Shelley’s vision of horror, and I want to look at the kind of the big questions, you know, about artificially extending life, things like in vitro fertilization, and all these sort of modern medical science that kind of terrorize us more than actual death itself. You know, I think Stephen King said when his mother was dying, he said that she died a death that only modern medicine could give. And, you know, so I think I want to open up some questions around, you know, our fear of mortality, our fear of dying, and the idea of tinkering with something as sacred as life and where do we draw the line and where do the ethics lie? So, I’m using Frankenstein as kind of the backdrop because Victor Frankenstein, of course, stepped over the boundaries and played God to bring a man back to life.

10:20Mayra Medina:Ā Wow.

10:21Alex Trenoweth:Ā So, it’s a bit of storytelling and a bit of thought-provoking analysis, not just of literature, but of life itself.

10:30Mayra Medina:Ā Yeah. I love also, I was reading in the program you guys have online, that also you will be talking about Uranus approaching Gemini, the ninth degree Gemini, which you call the volatile hot point of war in the American charts. Can you just tell us a little bit more about that?

10:46Alex Trenoweth:Ā Yeah, I don’t want to give too much away, but many years ago one of my first articles, in fact my very first published article, was onĀ Gone with the Wind. And in that I mentioned that the American Revolution, the American Civil War, D-Day all happened when Uranus was at 9 degrees Gemini. So clearly for the USA, I think that it’s a trigger point and that’s when Uranus goes all the way around the zodiac. So every time it does that, there’s some sort of war. And so we’re going to have Uranus at 9 degrees Gemini in a few years. Now, it may be, fingers crossed, we’ve learned something from history and we don’t get that far. But we all know that the next war that we have is going to be nuclear. Not going to be people, you know, using muskets and bows and arrows. It’s going to be, you know, quite serious. So, yeah, I’ll be talking a little bit about that as well.

11:50Mayra Medina:Ā Amazing. It sounds very interesting. And also while you have Rick Levine, he will be talking about, you know, what is real about Saturn and Neptune and the message of Three-Eyed Atlas, which is kind of trendy apparently these days. He will be also talking about the impact of AI, AR and ET. Very interesting topics. And also we have Steve J. He’s going to be talking about the Mercury-Mars conjunction that apparently is repeating five times. I didn’t know this, in different signs.

12:27Alex Trenoweth:Ā Steve is so good at spotting those kinds of patterns. And Rick, I can’t wait to talk to Rick about AI because my experience with AI, well, I don’t want to give anything away. I’ll speak to Rick because we’re going to have a panel discussion.

12:44Mayra Medina:Ā Yeah, guys. And if you cannot make it to London, you can always come and, you know, join us live. Well, join them. I’ll probably be there also livestreaming the event. And I will leave the link below in case you want to buy tickets and join this amazing MiNi Shifts Happen which obviously means a lot to us because it changed my life and certainly changed Alex’s life. Alex, how did the Shifts Happen change your life, by the way?

13:13Alex Trenoweth:Ā Yeah, I remember talking to people before it all started and because I think so many people were affected by the lectures and the chat afterwards. But for me, I feel like as an astrologer, I leveled up is the only way I can describe it. I just feel like, you know, I was kind of like everybody else, all the other astrologers, but then working with Steve and Rick has really made me feel like I’m on equal terms with them. I think I’ll leave it that way. Whereas before I started, I kind of felt a little bit like I didn’t belong there. But I remember saying, I think it was after my Algol lecture, I feel like I stepped into my power.

14:05Mayra Medina:Ā Yeah. No, and your talks were amazing. I mean, I remember the Algol / the royal family was so interesting. The education one, I honestly, I was so tired. I’m like, ā€œOkay, no, let’s — you can do it. Let’s just go to this one and that’s it.ā€ And I mean, I was sitting in the front. I remember it went really fast and it was so interesting. And I always mention the way you present, it’s a lot of fun, you know. I wish there were popcorn there because, you know, I was learning and we were laughing because you have this playful energy because you’re a teacher and probably you know how to keep us awake. So, it was very, very interesting and I think you did a great job and really you deserve the best because also the topics you are good at — I don’t think many astrologers are talking about education and astrology and education. And I’ve heard, by the way, that recently you launched a new book. Can you tell us a little bit more?

15:00Alex Trenoweth:Ā Yeah. And this was quite a big thing. So this took place at Waterstones Trafalgar Square here in London. So it’s a book retailer in central London, in one of the greatest parts of London, near Westminster. And I’m the first astrologer to actually give an author’s talk at a mainstream bookseller as far as I know, at least at Waterstones. And I was very nervous because I thought that if nobody came to my book launch, they’ll never ask another astrologer to come. But as it happened, it was absolutely solidly blocked, you know, everybody, it seemed like to me.

15:45Even had some of my friends here in my neighborhood who took me out to dinner the night before. ā€œIt’s all right, Alex. We’re going to be there for you. Don’t worry.ā€ And they showed up. I thought that was wonderful because they’re not astrologers. And, you know, I had support from the home team. Steve Judd came, Roy Gillett was there, and a few other really good friends just came out in support. I had fellow teachers there and I just really felt like, you know, I felt the love. I’ll just say that.

16:18Mayra Medina:Ā Yeah. Oh, that’s great. I think you deserve it. It’s your third… you publish your game and also it’s the third book. It’s not like the first book, right? So you’ve got quite of like an encyclopedia going on already. Any future books?

16:35Alex Trenoweth:Ā Oh, yeah. I’m already nearly done with the fourth one.

16:38Mayra Medina:Ā Okay. Really?

16:40Alex Trenoweth:Ā I’m working on the second volume ofĀ Mirror MirrorĀ because there’s been a lot of new biopics. So much got left out of the first volume because we weren’t sure how it was going to work and the first volume was such a lot of work. But the second volume is chugging along. And then I have my sixth book which probably won’t be released, you know, for another year or so. But I do have sort of an extract of the sixth book calledĀ Inheriting the Sky, which appears inĀ WellBeingĀ magazine, which is on Australian newsstands. So that’s really exciting because, you know, it’s not just about selling books at the astrology shop or at Watkins. It’s, you know, when you buy your milk and bananas, you can pick up a copy ofĀ WellBeingĀ magazine and there’s my article in there.

17:28Mayra Medina:Ā Yeah, great. Alex, tell us where can we find you online and what do you have? I mean, after Shifts Happen and next Monday, what’s the plan? Beyond Christmas and stuff, what are you working on?

17:39Alex Trenoweth:Ā Well, I hope to take a bit easier after the MiNi Shifts Happen because what I did was I completely turned my life upside down by restructuring my website completely. I’m working very hard on my new course about working with children and families. So what I’m doing is I’m training astrologers to work ethically with children and families because I think there’s quite a big gap in the market and I think what parents need is support for understanding their children. Children need help in understanding their parents and the boundaries that the parents lay down. One of my newer services in the past couple years has been parent preparation classes where a couple who’s considering having a baby, you know, they come to me and they ask me, ā€œWhat kinds of strengths do we have as parents and how can we strengthen the weaknesses?ā€ And yeah, that’s been quite popular. So, it’s on my website, but lots of different services. And I’m always looking for different ways that we can help children and support children so that in this world that we live in, there’s so many things that can go wrong and so many ways that parents become afraid of their own power. And, you know, how do I draw boundaries without resorting to something that might be construed as abusive? You know, when I was a kid, we got paddled. Well, these days you can’t do that, so what can I do? How can I support my child? So, there’s lots of different ways we can build trust with our children and understanding how trust can be built with astrology so you don’t have to trial and error to understand how children respond to discipline and what they need, the boundaries that they need in order to feel… children like boundaries so they want to feel safe and they want to feel supported.

19:44Mayra Medina:Ā Wow, that’s really cool guys. It opens your perspective. Astrology can be used in so many ways for so many good things. So, thank you, Alex, for everything you’ve done and your contributions to astrology. So, tell us a little bit more. For Shifts Happen, the big event, are you going to be there as well? I’ve seen that they already made it official. I think on the website…

20:08Alex Trenoweth:Ā They have indeed. It is happening. So, do you know the dates? What are you going to talk about? Have you thought about it? Because it’s already too far away, but still, I just wanted to ask you.

20:19Alex Trenoweth:Ā Well, I can tell you that last year I did a tour of London. I can’t say too much because we’re still planning, but we got something much bigger planned. And if I say Big Stones, that might give you a little clue. But we’re still at the planning stages with that. And I don’t know what I’m going to be talking about. I’m leaning towards doing something on mystic moments. But I got some… I got a few things I think I want to do. Now, I’m not the kind of astrologer that focuses on politics or, you know, what’s going on. I like to tell a story when I do my lecture. So, but I’ve got some plans.

21:07Mayra Medina:Ā Amazing.

21:09Alex Trenoweth:Ā So, I do really encourage, you know, if you’ve ever been to a big astrology conference and felt a little lost in the crowd or a little bit ignored, Shifts Happen isn’t like that at all. This is where, you know, you can really… Steve, Rick, and I really made it a point of having our meals with the attendees. You know, we didn’t pull ourselves away at our own little table unless we had something to talk about. We tried as much as possible to be as accessible as we could and, you know, we wanted to sit down in the evening and have a drink with everybody and just make it open so you can ask us questions. And I think, you know, if you think it’s oh it’s too expensive or too whatever, you’ve got a lot of time to save your money and it’s really well worth coming to.

22:00Mayra Medina:Ā Yeah, I strongly recommend it as well. But thanks for sharing that because I think it’s true, you know, you feel like you guys are so approachable and the people you meet there also. It’s not only about the astrologers, but the community, the talks, the mingling with different astrologers or therapists or psychologists even. And I think it’s a great event and I will strongly recommend everyone to come. The next one will be on May 15, 2026. It’s going to happen in Saint Albans. Is that how you say it in the UK? You can already join the waiting list. But for now, we have MiNi Shifts Happen coming next Monday, November 10th at 6 PM UK time. You can join Alex, Rick, and Steve for a livestream. They always obviously catch your questions too. You are not abandoned if you’re livestream. They always pay attention to your questions and if you have any comments as well, so you won’t be forgotten online.

23:08Alex, is there anything else you want to add or to tell the community?

23:15Alex Trenoweth:Ā No, it’s just that it’s just been a wonderful opportunity and to be together again with Rick and Steve, I’m so looking forward to it and looking forward to meeting everybody here in London and talking to you guys livestream as well.

23:29Mayra Medina:Ā Thank you so much, Alex, for this and I’m going to leave also Alex’s website. She’s starting a very interesting course about education and astrology. Alex is a box of different chocolates and all of them taste very good. So you can visit her website because she has a ton of very interesting things going on and her research and her books are really, really interesting as well.

23:54Also she has a show on her YouTube channel about biopics, you know, analyzing the charts of the actors that portray famous people. How’s that going, by the way, Alex, before we go?

24:06Alex Trenoweth:Ā It’s been going really, really well. And the feedback I get from my guests has been fantastic. We recently didĀ Road to NowhereĀ about Bruce Springsteen. My guest Katherine O’Connell and I were one of the first people in the world to see it because we got up early — well, I got to the cinema at 11 o’clock to see it — did the podcast immediately. A recent one was a Halloween special with Tracy Quinlan and Lillian Bennett. But I’ve interviewed Matthew Curry, who you talked about before. Very interesting person. Margaret Cahill, my publisher, Margaret Gray, who does relationships and astrology, Steve Judd of course, and Philip Daniel Miles, and I’m probably out a few people, which I don’t… Oh, Ariel Goodman, some really exciting people lined up. The Oxford astrologer, Christina Rodenbeck, and a whole lot of other secret weapons that are coming up. My great, my supernova guest.

25:05Mayra Medina:Ā I love it because it’s such a good way to learn astrology synastry because, you know, I was watching the one about the movieĀ Frida, you know, Salma Hayek and Frida herself, and the coincidences with the charts are amazing. Same with Maria Callas and Angelina Jolie and, you know, it’s such a fun way to learn astrology, also synastry. So thank you, Alex, for doing that and I think we’re going to leave it here.

25:34Thank you guys for listening and I hope to see you. We hope to see you in Shifts Happen. I’ll be online probably, but Alex will be there. So don’t miss it if you’re in London. This is a one-time opportunity to put these three together. So please don’t miss it and check the link below for tickets. So Alex, thank you so much for this small talk and see you soon.

25:56Alex Trenoweth:Ā See you soon. Thank you.
